Joel Embiid discusses getting himself, Paul George going for Sixers
The Philadelphia 76ers had a tough time getting things moving in the right direction in Thursday’s 139-105 loss to the Golden State Warriors. Golden State opened up an 18-point lead in the first quarter as Philadelphia had issues getting things going on the offensive end shooting 7-for-21 overall and 0-for-7 from deep.
An issue in the slow start was not getting Joel Embiid established. He shot only 2-for-6 and had two turnovers in the first quarter when the Warriors built their lead. He got going in the second and third quarters, but by then, it was too late. Golden State was on the run and the Sixers were not able to recover.
“I think it’s just about, as a team we’ve just got to come out faster,” Embiid told reporters. “We came out, made a few mistakes. Offensively we went out, we didn’t establish ourselves, and then obviously they made shots and we were in the hole pretty early on and then we could never recover from it. So yeah, I mean, just being aggressive from the start probably will help. So we’ll do a better job.”
Embiid did have 15 points in the third quarter as he got aggressive and demanded the ball. That has to happen from the jump. With the situation the Sixers are in right now, they can’t afford a passive Embiid at any moment in time right now. He has to be dominant.
As far as Paul George is concerned, he also started off slowly. He had two points on 1-for-3 shooting in the first quarter before getting things moving in the second quarter, but again, by then, the Warriors had already taken complete control of the contest. The Sixers could have used a more aggressive George from the jump.
“He’s gonna be fine,” Embiid said of George. “I think it’s just about making shots. You know the last two games, I think he’s finding his rhythm. He’s just got to be confident and be aggressive. We’re looking for him, we want him to be aggressive, and he’s just got to go out and just be himself and not think too much.”
The Sixers could use a much more aggressive Embiid and George when they finish this 6-game road trip on Saturday against the Brooklyn Nets.
