Judy Steele: Coming up with antique ideas

Coming up with subject material for my columns is getting harder. But if I look around my home for a few moments, usually — not always — an idea comes to mind. Strange how that happens sometimes.

The antique classes we have at Wild Bill’s on Tuesdays are going great guns. I am so excited to see so many people coming still, and I’m thrilled to death to have the help I have.

It makes me feel good to see them continuing and the size of the crowd. It’s amazing that we have such a great turn out.

Thank you all for coming and bringing things for show and tell — and to possibly get an estimate on the value of your items. It is a crazy world today but I am so thankful for your support.

It is that time of year for us to think about taking extra good care of our special treasures and our antique furniture.

Give a little extra care for your wood furniture — I still use Orange Oil by Howard Oil Products and I believe you can still get it at the CR Rustics Antique Shop or Ace Hardware. I love that stuff and I don’t worry about my wooden furniture drying out.

Now, let’s get down to the fun stuff — hunting for antique treasures and collectibles. I have not been on a hunting trip for so long, but for those of you who do go I wish you all good hunting!

The other night I was thinking about my years at the Antique Place on U.S. Highway 30 when we were just starting out. There were only four of us dealers at the time and just two of us who worked the store.

Everyone chipped in on expenses and time as well. I will never regret my time at that store — we had so much fun, but we did lots of work too.

The time spent there kept us going even further and bigger down the road. I am sorry that I am no longer in a co-op antique store — but I still love to look.

What should you be looking for when you’re on a treasure hunt?

First of all, we each have our own tastes and we’re all looking for different types of items.

Some only want furniture and others want smaller items as their home may already be crowded with larger items.

Each person has their own ideas of what they are looking for and that is great — that is what collecting is all about of course.

Sometimes we find something in a totally different category than we thought we might like to have. And when we do find that rare or unusual item, that is the time to buy.

What I love to hear at classes are the latest finds they have found or a new or different shop. Whatever it is, I love hearing about it all and it makes it exciting to still see the interest in our collecting.

Many times I have spoken to people on the phone regarding who to contact for buying or selling some items or they are just asking about values on today’s markets. I would still highly recommend that you contact the owners of CR Rustic Antique Mall to help you with some of that.

I do not stay current on a lot of things any more like I used to do because I do not buy for resale and my house is full. So sometimes it is very hard to look when you really don’t have the room for any more things.

And yet, I tell myself I could sell something and maybe bring in something different that way. Then I look around me as I am sitting here on my couch in the middle of my living room and I do not see a single thing I want to sell or get rid of yet!

This old girl is very happy with what I have nowadays but it is always fun to look at what is for sale today.

I do remind everyone, stay up to date with what your valuables and collectibles are worth. It’s always wise to keep up with the changes in values, just for your safety sake. Also it is fun to see anything we have go up value. It means we did good by buying a few years back.

Hope everyone has a great week ahead. Stay safe and be careful out there.
