Juneteenth is June 19, but the Augusta area is hosting festivities all week

A month before July 4, the community has another big independence day to celebrate. Juneteenth is coming soon, but Augusta-area residents don’t have to wait until June 19. There are festivals, shows, cook-outs, and more scheduled throughout the week prior. Here’s a look at some of them:

Burke County’s Juneteenth Celebration is noon to 11 p.m. June 14 at Boggs Rural Life Center in Keysville at 4729 W. Quaker Rd. with highlights including a 2K run, food vendors, a fish fry, and a movie night. It will be followed by a Juneteenth Parade at 1 p.m. June 15 in Waynesboro. It will line up across from Southern Bank Pavilion, traveling down Liberty to the Exchange Club Fairgrounds. After the parade, there will be more fun at the fairgrounds with food vendors, gaming trucks, a petting zoo, a talent show, and other activities.

Dearing’s Juneteenth Celebration is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 15 at the Dearing Walking Track and Gym at 4685 Augusta Hwy. There will be live music, BBQ, and more fun.

Augusta Museum of History’s Juneteenth Discovery Day is 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 15 in Augusta at 560 Reynolds St. There will be a range of activities like performances, special readings, documentary screenings, crafts, and scavenger hunts. Those in the rotunda and Garden City Room are free, but those inside will require a museum ticket. Adults get in for $5, seniors $4, children ages 6-18 $3, and younger kids get in free.

The Juneteenth Celebration in Aiken is 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 15 at the Center for African American History, Art and Culture at 120 York St. SE. There will be a brief history of the holiday, live music, thematic crafts, tile painting, bingo, and a puppet show.

Unity Fest is noon to 5 p.m. June 15 at Pendleton King Park in Augusta at 1600 Troupe St. There will be a bounce house, vendors, a mini fashion show, dance groups, a blood drive, and meditation.

National Action Network’s Juneteenth Parade, Drum line stick off, and Community Awareness Festival is June 15 in downtown Augusta. The parade lines up 2 p.m. at the James Brown Arena parking lot at 601 7th St. The stick off and festival is 4 p.m. at the Augusta Common on the 800 block of Broad Street. There will be food trucks, various vendors, medical screenings, and live entertainment. Admission is free.

Free-ish Art Exhibit is 6-9 p.m. June 15 at Humanitree House in Augusta at 305 8th St. There will be several featured visual artists plus live performances, food, and refreshments.

Dope Spit Open Mic is 8-10 p.m. June 17 at Ikonz Sports Bar & Grill in Augusta at 1515 N. Leg Rd. A variety of artists will perform including poets and comedians. There will be a $15 cover, but those interested can buy tickets for a small discount ahead of time on eventbrite.com.

The 8th annual Juneteenth Augusta Celebration is noon to 9:30 p.m. June 19 at the James Brown Arena parking lot. There will be live performances, multiple vendors, kid-friendly entertainment, food, and health and wellness checks. Admission is free.
