Kansas City shoppers have new ways to shop, pay for groceries

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Shoppers may have a new way to pay the bill the next time they head to the virtual checkout line.

Hy-Vee announced Monday it is accepting PayPal and Venmo as forms of payment for online orders. PayPal and Venmo can only be used through Hy-Vee’s Aisles Online platform when a customer places a grocery pickup or delivery order.

Hy-Vee said customers ordering online for pickup and delivery has dramatically increased since 2019.

It comes as two other grocery stores in the Kansas City area roll out new smart shopping carts.

Price Chopper in Parkville and McKeever’s Market & Eatery in Lee’s Summit are testing shopping carts that use AI. According to a news release, customers place items in the carts and can see a running total of what’s inside. Customers can even apply coupons and check prices through the AI-powered carts.

The carts are made by Instacart and called “Caper Carts.”

Customers using the baskets then check out without removing items from a cart or going through a line.
