Kansas loses conference opener in heartbreaking fashion, dropping 3 straight

MORGANTOWN, WV. (WIBW) – Kansas falls in its conference opener in heartbreaking fashion 32-28 to West Virginia, dropping three straight.

This game started with the Mountaineers getting on the scoreboard first as Jahiem White ran it in for a 1-yard touchdown to make it 7-0 Mountaineers.

Then after back-to-back interceptions by Jalon Daniels and Garrett Greene the Jayhawks get the ball and march down the field.

Devin Neal takes the carry and runs it from 11 yards to tie the game up at 7-7.

The Mountaineers will end the first half with a Greene 5-yard touchdown run to put West Virginia up 14-7 at the break.

The Jayhawks come out strong to start the second half as Daniels finds his man Luke Grimm for the 7-yard connection to tie the game back up 14-14.

The Mountaineers would add a field goal to take the lead 17-14.

The next Jayhawk’s possession Daniel Hishaw Jr. will take the handoff and runs it in from 11 yards to give Kansas the lead 21-17.

Then after a 2-hour weather delay the Jayhawks come out in the fourth quarter and Grimm will take it to the house to extend the Jayhawks lead 28-17.

The Mountaineers wouldn’t go away as Greene connects with Kole Taylor for the 8-yard score and after a successful 2-point conversion they cut the deficit to three, 28-25.

After a Kansas three and out, the Mountaineers take the ball down the field and Greene finds Rodney Gallagher for the 15-yard score to take the lead 32-28 with 26 seconds remaining.

Daniels went 15/25 for 184 yards with a touchdown and interception.

Neal had 27 carries for 110 yards and a touchdown. Hishaw had 9 carries for 72 yards and a touchdown.

The Jayhawks fall to 1-3 on the year and will host the TCU Horned Frogs in their first conference opener at Arrowhead in Kansas City next Saturday.
