KC sports fans warned of return of common ticket scam

CLAY CO., Mo. (KCTV) – Kansas City sports fans have been warned to practice caution when buying tickets for upcoming games from strangers as a common scam returns.

The Clay County, Missouri, Sheriff’s Office took to social media on Thursday, Oct. 3, to warn sports fans around the metro to avoid a common ticket scam. At least one report has been taken so far this season from victims who attempted to buy tickets but were scammed instead.

Investigators indicated that similar reports on social media point to the same woman, “Dana,” who attempts to scam others on Facebook. In this case, she allegedly had Chiefs tickets to sell.

Law enforcement officials noted that Dana and the victim agreed on a single $500 payment over Facebook Messenger. However, the victim was sent two separate Apple Pay requests from different phone numbers.

The Sheriff’s Office said this caused the victim to become suspicious, however, one $500 payment had already been sent. The victim cut communication and reported the incident to law enforcement.

Investigators have warned fans to be cautious as they purchase tickets from individuals they do not know. The safest bet is always to purchase tickets directly from the ticket vendor.
