Kentucky Transportation | Hazardous conditions; avoid travel

Ky. (WSAZ) – State salt truck and plow crews remain on roads in all northeast Kentucky counties battling moderate to heavy snowfall. Snow is expected to transition to freezing rain overnight. Kentuckians are encouraged to avoid non-essential travel.

At 5:30 p.m., crews in Bath, Boyd, Carter, Elliott, Fleming, Greenup, Lewis, Mason, Nicholas, and Rowan counties report 2 to 6 inches of snow, with the heaviest snowfall along the I-64 corridor. Highways are mostly covered with snow. Air temps are 24 to 27 degrees, with road temps around 31 degrees.

Crews continue to focus on clearing travel lanes on main roads like I-64 and other high priority routes to keep them passable for emergency responders. The National Weather Service expects a wintry mix of weather and hazardous driving conditions to continue through Monday. Arctic temps in the days ahead will also impact the speed of road treatments, especially after dark.

While some travel lanes on major highways could be visible as snowfall tapers and plows make progress, drivers should not expect bare pavement and should avoid travel or plan accordingly.

The threat of ice will also elevate dangerous road conditions and increase the likelihood of downed trees and power lines. Remember to never touch or moved downed utility lines and treat dark traffic signals as four-way stops.

With more than 1,400 plow trucks available and more than 2,300 staff and crew members, KYTC maintains most roads, streets and bridges that are part of the State Highway System, including interstates, parkways, and U.S. route designations.
