KSHSAA approves several postseason changes across variety of sports

TOPEKA, Kan. (KCTV) – Changes are coming to postseason formats and championship sites across Kansas high school athletics.

In an executive board meeting for KSHSAA this week, changes to basketball, football, wrestling, and track and field were all approved.

One of the substantial changes — as announced in January — is state football championships, which will be moving to three sites with three games played at each site. The executive board approved the following sites and schedule for 2024:

Emporia State University

  • Class 6A: Friday, Nov. 29 at 2 p.m.
  • Class 4A: Saturday, Nov. 30 at 1 p.m.
  • Class 5A: Saturday, Nov. 30 at 7 p.m.

Hutchinson Community College:

  • Class 2A: Friday, Nov. 29 at 6 p.m.
  • Class 3A: Saturday, Nov. 30 at 12 p.m.
  • Class 1A: Saturday, Nov. 30 at 5 p.m.

Kiowa County High School, Greensburg:

  • Class 8-player DII: Saturday, Nov. 30 at 11 a.m.
  • Class 6-player: Saturday, Nov. 30 at 3 p.m.
  • Class 8-player DI: Saturday, Nov. 30 at 7 p.m.

KSHSAA also announced changes to the state basketball tournaments. Beginning in March 2026, the state basketball tournaments will be moving to four total sites. The four facilities will play host to the seven classifications’ 14 championships.

A schedule and other event details will be determined following the 2024-25 basketball season, KSHSAA said.

In wrestling, KSHSAA said it will add a fourth class for girls to mirror the boys wrestling classification designations. That addition will also necessitate another championship site, meaning 6A, 5A, 4A and 3-1A will each have their own sites.

In track and field, qualification for the state meet was adjusted to include the top 3 plus the next four best regional performances in each event.
