KSP shares safety tips for New Year’s Eve travel
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) – With New Year’s Eve celebrations taking place Tuesday night across the area, the Kentucky State Police are giving tips to ensure drivers are safe when on the roads.
“We just want to make sure everybody is taking the precautions needed to avoid collisions and everybody makes it safe,” KSP Post 3 Public Affairs Officer, Katan Parker said.
Trooper Parker said one of the first things those who plan to travel to their New Year’s Eve celebrations can do to make sure they arrive safely at their destinations is to wear a seat belt while in the car.
Trooper Parker also stressed the importance of having a designated driver or other plans to get home safely, if you do drink.
“Wait [to drink] till you get there with your family, wait till you get there with your friends, have a good time, stay there until you’re sober or sleep over,” he said.
He adds that when preparing for your travel, you should make sure to pack essentials such as a phone charger and try to leave early for your destination if you can.
“We want to make sure people are leaving early enough so they don’t have to speed and be in a rush or anything like that. On top of that, we like for people to try to be prepared,” Trooper Parker said. “Take a pack of stuff, you don’t want to be stranded on the side of the road.”
If you are pulled over for being drunk, Trooper Parker said you could go to jail or lose your license.
“That’s why we try to let everybody know, hey, try to avoid all this. It’s not worth going to jail. It’s not worth losing your license, because it’s hard to get your license back,” he said.
