KW Fitness hosts annual ‘Pushups for Veterans’ fundraiser

VESTAL — KW Fitness hosted its 11th annual “Pushups for Veterans” fundraiser on Saturday.

Clients, employees and community members gathered at KW Fitness at 10 a.m. to participate in the event.

The fundraiser is a challenge to do as many push-ups as possible in 90-second increments. Each push-up equaled one dollar, so 10,000 push-ups were required to raise the $10,000 goal.

The event began with a head start, as early participants had completed nearly 7,500 push-ups in the weeks before the challenge. On Saturday, the group aimed to finish the remaining 2,500 push-ups to hit their goal.

A veteran and 11th-year participant at Shane Armstrong spoke about the importance of the cause.

“There‘s so many veterans in the Southern Tier here, it is extremely heartwarming to see what our community does to step up and to support the people in need,” Armstrong told 12 News.

In the past decade, KW Fitness has raised more than $100,000 for the Southern Tier Veterans Support Group, which assists veterans across 14 counties in the region.

The fitness center set up two push-up rooms, one room featured a modified section for participants with varying fitness levels.

Armstrong added that while the push-ups aren’t as rigorous as military-style push-ups, including everyone in the challenge allows every dollar to count.
