KWTX says goodbye to beloved Sports Director Darby Brown after 5 years of serving the Central Texas community

WACO, Texas (KWTX) – Sports Director Darby Brown is leaving KWTX after five years of exceptional work serving the sports community of Central Texas.

Darby’s covered multiple state championships, college titles and even a national men’s basketball championship since arriving to KWTX in September 2019.

She’s packed a lot of big moments into a few years, but what Darby’s likely most remembered for is the way she reported on people.

“Darby has championed what we believe is the next generation of sports coverage, meaning more than just highlights but crafting stories about the people and places who love the game,” said KWTX General Manager Josh Young.

Darby’s series which looked at the history behind the names of local stadiums called “Built on a Name” resonated with Central Texans from small towns to big. It was nominated for an Emmy award.

Darby was also named Best Sports Anchor for the Texas Association of Broadcasters.

Darby covered two Big 12 Championship football games, one which Baylor won in 2021.

She’s been on the sidelines of two Sugar Bowls.

Darby brought back all the excitement to viewers when Baylor Men’s Basketball won a national championship in 2021 in Indianapolis under Head Coach Scott Drew.

From college to high school, Darby has been at the forefront of covering dozens of youth games, even through the COVID pandemic.

Darby reported on Lorena and China Spring High Schools’ state football championships.

She was on the diamond when China Spring won a state baseball championship with a walk-off hit in 12 innings in 2023.

Darby covered the La Vega girl’s basketball team when they brought home a title and reported from the parade that followed as the whole town celebrated.

Former KWTX anchor Dan Ingham has worked alongside Darby the last few years as KWTX broadcasts Thursday night high school football games.

He said she’s a real talent.

“Darby is a really special broadcaster,” Ingham said. “I’ve been fortunate enough to work with her on these Thursday night football games for several years now. I knew that she was going to be really talented in broadcasting going back to 2021when we were doing the Big 12 Championship, the pregame show, in Arlington, and she was a young sports director at the time. She had a bunch of more experienced broadcasters, if you will, but she held her own in a big-time way.”

Darby said she’s thankful for the time she’s had in Waco.

“There’s just so many big events,” Darby reminisced. “I feel super lucky and thankful, and I’ve loved telling stories.”

Darby’s last Xtra Point Friday night high school football show will be tonight.

Her final assignment at KWTX will be Baylor Gameday Live at 9 a.m. Saturday as the Bears prepare to take on BYU.

Darby has accepted a position in sports broadcasting in Austin.
