Laredo business burglarized, linked to stolen truck chase
LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) – A Laredo business is starting the new year on a heartbreaking note when Narváez Flower Shop, a community staple for 30 years, was burglarized.
On the morning of Thursday, January 2, a person wearing a hoodie was caught on security cameras breaking into a business in Downtown Laredo and taking two cash registers.
All while a man is sleeping on the second floor, only awakened after the criminal had left.
According to the owner of Narváez Flower Shop, Veronica Valdez, “When I saw it, it was very shocking and sad. San to know that these individuals are breaking into small business.“
Valdez says their security cameras alerted them of the break-in, believing that the criminal knew the layout of the shop.
Noting, “They probably just came for the cash registers. Maybe they knew where they were or just saw them through the windows, but they just went straight to the cash registers.“
Although the investigation is still in the preliminary phases on how the criminal got inside the store without alerting the upstairs tenant, for business owners, Laredo Police advises them to double-check when locking up for the day.
According to Investigator Joe Baeza with Laredo Police, “We’ve had calls from customers in the morning saying ‘I got to the store, pulled on the door and hadn’t realized that they weren’t closed and the door was wide open.’ So, all these little things need to be better as a business, so you can also help prevent yourself from being a victim of a crime.“
While Narváez Flower Shop begins the process of recovery, Valdez shares the following message for other businesses around the area.
“Check around other businesses if they have cameras to see if they can check if anyone is breaking into their business. To check around with neighbors, and be good with them. That way, they can help you whenever you need them,” Valdez said.
The owner says most of their transactions are made electronically, so they believe the criminal only got away with a low amount of cash.
Authorities managed to find evidence connecting the suspect to a pursuit that took place later that day through surveillance footage, which captured the same vehicle and suspect dressed in the same outfit.
However, the investigation remains ongoing with Laredo Police expecting to release charges on Friday, January 3.
