Larian Is Developing Its Next Two Games At The Same Time

Highlights

  • Now with a much larger team, Larian is developing two RPGs at once.
  • One RPG is further ahead than the other, but Larian wants to keep both productions moving concurrently.
  • Neither of these RPGs are Baldur’s Gate 4, with the studio moving away from Dungeons & Dragons.

One year on from Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian is still supporting its behemoth RPG with updates. However, these won’t last forever, and we already know that the studio is looking ahead to its next projects.

Now, Larian CEO Swen Vincke says that the development of its next two RPGs is happening concurrently, rather than completing one before the other can kick off. This is a different method from what we’ve seen in the past, with Larian previously going from project to project, creating pretty long wait times between new games.

Larian Is Making Two RPGs At Once

This comes from a report from PC Gamer, giving us some insight into what Larian is working on right now. Here, Vincke says that its next two RPGs are being made concurrently, but admits that the team is running into some issues with this method.

“We had some people who were dedicated to the other one, and they just got swallowed by the ambitions of the one that we want to release first,” says Vincke. “So we will try to do it concurrently, but we have to figure out how to leave people alone.”

He also admits that one is further ahead than the other, which makes sense – you wouldn’t expect a studio to drop two RPGs at once. It remains to be seen what they actually are.

There has been some overlap in the past, with early work on Baldur’s Gate 3 kicking off in 2016, as per the
Larian website
. This would have been just before the launch of
Divinity: Original Sin 2
a year later.

Larian isn’t spilling the beans on its next games just yet. When we spoke to two Baldur’s Gate 3 devs recently, they asked fans to “let [them] cook”, so we’re probably in for a bit of a wait. We don’t even know what games are in the works right now, beyond the fact that they are RPGs.

One thing we do know is that neither of them is Baldur’s Gate 4, with Larian previously announcing that it’s moving away from Dungeons & Dragons. However, in the PC Gamer interview, Vincke admitted that work on another Baldur’s Gate game was underway before it was scrapped, so it was considered.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is the long-awaited next chapter in the Dungeons & Dragons-based series of RPGs. Developed by Divinity creator Larian Studios, it puts you in the middle of a mind flayer invasion of Faerûn, over a century after the events of its predecessor.
