Lauren Santo Domingo’s One In, Two Out Approach to Shopping

The Good Buy is a new podcast from Harper’s Bazaar in which editors Leah Chernikoff and Lynette Nylander invite celebrities, designers, models, and tastemakers to talk shop: what they buy, where they got it, and why it matters. Come down the fashion rabbit hole and take a peek inside the closets and shopping carts of the world’s most stylish people. Learn how they use style to tell their stories.

Lauren Santo Domingo is a purveyor of good taste. The Moda Operandi co-founder and chief brand officer (and most recently, artistic director of Tiffany Home) doesn’t miss a beat when it comes to forecasting the lastest fashion trends—she also has a keen eye for interior design. It’s a skill that can be credited to a decades-long career working in fashion along with studying the fabulous “old broads” who came before her. Below, she discusses her style evolution, the one rule she won’t break when it comes to shopping, and her dream buy.

On the women who inspire her:

“I definitely always look to women who are older than me. So right now I’m in my forties. I’m looking at these like old broads who live decadent lives. They go to parties, have long lunches. I’m thinking of Deeda Blair, Annette de la Renta, these fabulous women. They love art. They love culture. They seem to take advantage of all the great things in the city, museums and shows. And I find that to be very aspirational.”

On her style evolution:

“I would still say as much as it’s evolving, it’s still very true to who I am. I grew up on the East Coast and the West Coast. So I feel like I have a classical East Coast side. But then, from the West Coast, I love color and to be playful and I try not to take things too seriously.”

On her approach to shopping:

“I live in the 20s in Manhattan—I live in midtown—and there’s something that’s so applicable about that because I feel like my style, it’s like, maybe I’m a little cooler than like the ladies on the Upper East Side, but I’m definitely like a lot uncooler than all the girls on the downtown.”

On her shopping golden rule:

“I also have a one in, two out rule. If I buy one black sweater, I have to be willing to rotate out two.”

SHOP LAUREN’S GOOD BUYS:

HER FIRST BUY:

Hermès Collier de Chien 32 Belt

“So the first real designer purchase I ever made was the Hermès Chien belt. It was in Paris, it was the nineties, it was modeling. It just felt like a very supermodel thing to do. Even then I realized that this was something timeless…And I still have it. It’s beautiful. It’s perfect. It’s in perfect condition and I still travel with it in its original pouch.”

HER REPEAT BUY:

Eres Ilona Soyeuse Recycled Jersey Underwire Bra

“I am a big proponent of proper undergarments. I think the safest bet is an Eres bra. It gives the nice silhouette, like a proper shape. And I stand by this, it makes all the difference in the world. If you’re going to be wearing nice clothes, you need to be wearing the proper underpinnings.”

HER DREAM BUY:

The Row Awar Suede Over-The-Knee Boots

“I would have to say there are two things that are on Moda that just launched and both of them are extravagantly priced. One is a black tall boot. It’s like the perfect boot. It’s an uptown heel and a downtown heel.”

The Row Jan Coat

“And then there is a shawl coat, it’s like a cocoon shawl coat. You know, there’s all these things just like wrapped once around the shoulder and there’s like a coat or a knit with a jaunty scarf…This [one] is for Paris, this is for couture in January. It’s pretty special.”
