Laverne Cox’s Emmys Moment With ‘Baby Reindeer’ Star Nava Mau Will Make You Teary

Laverne Cox and “Baby Reindeer” star Nava Mau shared a touching moment Sunday night on the 2024 Emmys red carpet.

Cox, who served as an E! News host for the carpet event, fought back tears as Mau approached her for an interview ahead of the ceremony.

“I’m supposed to keep it together. I’m the host,” the “Orange is the New Black” actor said. “I’m so proud of you. I’m so proud of you.” (Watch the video here.)

Cox then reflected on how she became the first openly transgender person to be nominated for an acting Emmy 10 years ago.

Fast forward to this year’s Emmys, Mau made history by becoming the first trans person to be nominated in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie category for her performance in the Netflix thriller “Baby Reindeer.”

“Ten years later, I’m not the last,” Cox said, noting that Mau’s now the fourth transgender person to earn an Emmy nomination.

“I think that what we’ve been fighting for as a community, is to be able to tell stories that come from the heart. And that are based from a human foundation,” Mau said. “Because that’s who we are as trans people — we are humans.”

The “Baby Reindeer” actor said that she’s “very proud” of the show.

“Ultimately I hope that we continue to get to be all that we are as trans people onscreen,” she continued.

Mau, who plays a transgender woman in “Baby Reindeer,” told The Hollywood Reporter in July that the role helped her reflect on her own experiences as a trans woman.

“I had no idea that I internalized so much anger and that I shut it down,” she said at the time. “As a trans woman, as a Latina woman, I have had to do that in order to survive. … It’s kind of been my responsibility to take care of other people’s emotions.”

Acting in “Baby Reindeer” was “very empowering for me to get in tune with my body again,” she added.
