Lexington hosts ‘toughest two minutes in sports’
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – More than 170 first responders flocked to Lexington to compete in the Southeast Classic Firefighter Challenge, which many call the “toughest two minutes in sports.”
“My personal goal? Survive. That’s it!” said Caden Wilson, St. Lucie County Fire District competitor.
“Buzzer starts. You’re going to carry a hose pack up the tower, hoist, come down. You’ve got the Keiser sled machine, delineators, pulling the hose. Finish it off with a big ole 100-foot dummy drag,” said Wilson, explaining all the tasks the competitors must master.
Lexington hosts the southeast region portion of the competition. Lexington’s women’s team has twice been the world champions.
It’s not just this competition that they’ve got their sights set on. Everyone competing today can make it to the national and global stage.
A competitor of Lexington’s fire department is Sarah McGill.
“Oh yeah, we’re always going for a PR. That’s one of those things about this on the individuals you’re always racing yourself. We travel around all over the country and compete throughout the season,” said McGill.
While winning is good for bragging rights, the purpose behind the competition is to help others better.
“The training that we put into this course relates to being able to perform the duties on the job,” said Wilson.
