LHUCA brings in filmmakers from around the world for 21st annual Flatland Film Festival

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The Louise Hopkins Center for the Arts is celebrating its 21st annual Flatland Film Festival.

The festival brings filmmakers and enthusiasts together to enjoy short films from around the world.

Mary Hogan, the program’s manager at LHUCA, says the diversity of the films shown is what makes the festival great.

“We have some films from France, we have some films I think from Spain and of course we have our Iranian filmmaker block on Friday and our Iranian feature,” Hogan said. “It’s just a cool opportunity to get a wide perspective of viewpoints and stories, and there is something that will resonate with everybody.”

A filmmaker’s meetup is set for Friday morning, which LHUCA highlights as an opportunity to help those who aspire to be in the film industry.

“Intended to kind of connect those students and the existing filmmakers with other professionals in the community,” Hogan said. “It’s really neat because there’s people in the community that worked with Warner Brothers or Paramount with all sorts of different experiences, and they are all back in Lubbock.”

LHUCA also wants to show off Lubbock as a potential spot to shoot films.

“It brings tourism to Lubbock. We get a lot of visiting filmmakers coming in,” Hogan said. “I think it’s a great exposure to Lubbock, one of the visiting filmmakers from Taos says that he regards Lubbock as a cultural oasis in this area.”

Hogan says she is excited about the potential for future films taking place in the Hub City.

“If Lubbock has farmland, if Lubbock has wineries, if Lubbock has all these commercial buildings, it’s really just putting it out there that we have options available and people and business owners that are ready to be collaborative to people that are wanting to film,” Hogan said.

The Flatland Film Festival kicks off Thursday at 6 p.m. with more events being held Friday and Saturday.

All screenings will be held at the LHUCA Firehouse Theater located at 511 Avenue K.
