Venezuela defeats Japan, 3-2

There was no shortage of drama in the showdown between Venezuela and Japan.

After a back-and-forth start to the contest, it seemed like Venezuela was going to cruise to victory when it pushed across three runs in the fourth behind back-to-back triples from Beiker Zarraga and Luis Yepez.

However, Japan battled back with two runs of its own and forced starting pitcher Diego Biarreta from the game.

Yet Jhonson Freitez shined in relief for the victors and allowed a single hit while striking out three in the final three innings. That’s not to say there wasn’t a scare, though, as Japan put runners on second and third with one out in the sixth inning.

Venezuela then cut down the potential tying run at the plate on a ground ball before Freitez induced a fly out to preserve the 3-2 win.

Next up is a matchup with Chinese-Taipei, but Venezuela will surely celebrate Thursday’s thrilling win first.
