The Center for the Arts is pleased to present Lolo’s Lounge Featuring Avetta Newby-Jones in the Marisa Funk Theater on June 9, 2024.
Alvetta Newby-Jones is coming back to Grass Valley to share the stage once again with Lorraine—this time they’ll be taking on some of the most iconic women’s soul grooves through the ages in their tribute to the Queens of Soul and Funk.
Come out and share a great night with two old friends who love to sing together and share a love of the positive power of music. Alvetta and Lorraine will be backed by the Lolo’s Lounge All-Star players; Ray Sayre on guitar, Jon Kelly on piano, Tim Bulkley on drums, Chris Kelly, Matt Langley, and Phil Kemper on horns, Charlie Faber on bass, and Michelle Amador on backing vocals. This is sure to be a super funky, get-down night with tunes by Aretha, Chaka Kahn, Millie Jackson, Gladys Knight, and more!
Alvetta is a native of Washington, D.C. As she likes to say, “D.C. born and bred.” She has a lengthy background in musical theater and has been singing professionally for over 25 years. During her time with the funk group, Cherry Royale, she had the opportunity to open for some of the best soul and funk players in the game including Soulive, The New Mastersounds, Orgone, and even “The Woo” himself, Mr. Bernie Worrell. While living in Nevada County, Alvetta’s projects included singing with the Grammy award-winning “Secret Agent 23 Skidoo” and her personal project, the jazz-soul group, FlyTiger. She and her husband Richard (on drums), also performed with “fellow soul sista” Lorraine Gervais in the original Velvet Foxes disco show, at their famous neighborhood “Patio Jams” to keep sane through Covid, and most recently on the Center’s stage in 2022 for Lolo’s Lounge Cabaret series. Now living in Tulsa, she’s looking forward to coming back to the West Coast and performing with Lorraine on the Center for the Arts stage once again!
This is bound to be a fun and funky get-down night! Don’t miss out on Lolo’s Lounge featuring Alvetta Newby Jones on June 9, 2024.
