Lubbock gym owner gives tips on how to keep your New Year’s fitness resolutions
only LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Focusing on fitness is a top priority for many this time of year, but according to research conducted by Forbes Health, many resolutions only last two to three months.
That’s why Brandan Fokken with Gym Culture says it’s important to start with a plan that works for you.
“Whether it’s walking on a treadmill twice a week and working up to four days a week or lifting weights once and going up to two days or three days or four days, you kind of want to baby step up as you move forward to make it a lifestyle,” Fokken said.
It’s not just about being in the gym though. Two key parts to the equation are dieting and education.
“We’re in a place in history where things are so much easier and accessible to us,” Fokken said. “We have AI and these things where we can go on there and say act like you’re a personal trainer and write me a nutrition protocol that I can follow. Watch YouTube or watch other videos on TikTok where people talk about nutrition.”
Fokken explains a key to achieving your goals is to take it one day at a time, that way you’re not working too hard in the gym and doing it right.
“Don’t come in and try to kill yourself seven days a week,” Fokken said. “Your body’s not used to it. I usually tell people to take a class or do a full-body workout the first few weeks, just to get your body movement in order and get used to it first, cause your body likely, if you haven’t been in, isn’t used to it.”
Lastly, Brandan says if you’re nervous about stepping back in, focus on yourself and ask questions if you need additional help.
“When you come into a gym, it’s people just like you; they’re trying to get better,” Fokken said, “and those people are very accommodating. They’re kind and they’re willing to help you get to that next step. Come in, bring a friend, make a friend, be confident in your abilities, and come in and have a good time with it.”
