Scots A team tied for second at WBU Fall Classic; Scots B team in fourth place

KENNETT, Mo.- The Lyon College men’s golf team is tied for second place at the Williams Baptist Fall Classic at Kennett Country Club after the first day of competition.

The Scots are at 293 after Day 1 and are tied with Mineral Area Community College. Central Baptist College leads the men’s division with a 292.

Individually, John Blake Turner shot an even 72, Michael Winne shot a 73, Brooks Vangilder shot a 73, Ryan Kriz came in with a 75, and Bentley Madden shot a 78 on the first day.

The Scots B squad is fourth overall with a 296 from the first day of competition.

Individually, Manav Perfecto leads the way with a three-under 69, Tyler Doucet shot a 74, Isaac Gooch was at 76, Robert Hopper came in with a 77, and Wes Lange shot a 78.

Scots sweep 2024 Highland Classic

BATESVILLE, Ark. — The Lyon College women’s volleyball team swept all competition in the 2024 Highlander Classic.

It was an action-packed weekend of volleyball at the Highlander Classic inside Becknell Gymnasium. The Scots played host to Williams Baptist University, Mission University, and Bethel University (TN) for the tournament.

The action for the Scots started at 6:30 PM Friday night when they opened up their tournament run against Mission University. The match went four sets and saw the Scots (4-1) defeat the Patriots (1-12) by a final score of 3-1. Senior outside hitter Kylee Sabella led the Scots in both kills (17) and aces (3) in the match. Sabella and sophomore defensive specialist Marti Flores also shared the leading total in digs (16). Senior middle blocker Samantha Ferguson led in blocks (5), and freshman setter Caroline Snow had a whopping 26 assists. Other notable performances in the match included junior opposite hitter Mollie McCoy, with 16 kills along with three blocks, and junior setter Madeline Hopson, who garnered 17 assists and an ace.

The Scots followed up with a 3-1 victory over Bethel University (7-2) on Saturday afternoon. Snow had another stellar performance, leading the way for the Scots in total assists (22) and aces (3). Flores also played well, putting up 15 digs and seven assists. Sabella led the Scots in total kills (20) and digs (16), while Ferguson once more led in blocks (5). Hopson also had a great outing against Bethel as she garnered 20 assists and 10 digs against the Wildcats. Junior outside hitter Cristen Cleveland and sophomore middle blocker Keeley Beary also played well, collecting 13 and 10 kills, respectively.

The home team capped off a sweep of the 2024 Highlander Classic on Saturday night with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Williams Baptist University (1-10). Sabella and Beary led the way for the Scots in total kills (11); Sabella also led the Scots with a total of five aces. Snow led with 15 total assists, with Hopson right behind her, garnering 14 of her own. Cleveland had the most digs (11), with Sabella (10) and Flores (8) not far behind. Senior middle blocker Mikhayla Wright also capped off a solid tournament performance in her own right, collecting the most blocks (3) against the Eagles.

The Lyon College women’s volleyball team returns to action next Tuesday, September 10, as they hit the road to take on Central Baptist College for a 7 p.m. start. Their next home match will be a week later on Tuesday, Sept. 17 when they return to Becknell Gymnasium to host Crowleys Ridge College for a 6 p.m. start.

Scots defeat Grinnell 48-28

GRINNELL, Iowa – Two pick-six touchdowns by the Lyon College defense in the fourth quarter, coupled with a 164-yard, two-touchdown performance by Jaylin Babers and three touchdown passes from Joe Galay, led the Scots to a resounding 48-28 victory over the Grinnell Pioneers on Saturday afternoon in Iowa.

Lyon College (1-0) scored on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Galay to Reggie Brown II with 7:09 left before halftime to cut Grinnell’s lead to 7-6. The Pioneers responded with another score, but Clifford Washington hauled in a 54-yard touchdown pass from Galay to cut the lead to 14-12 with 4:04 to go in the second quarter. The Pioneers (0-1) scored again in the period to take a 21-12 lead into halftime.

However, the third quarter opened with Babers running for a 5-yard touchdown at the 13:23 mark and Brown II catching a 14-yard touchdown pass from Galay with 9:03 left in the third quarter to put the Scots up 25-21. Jesus Romero-Castillo added a 29-yard field goal with 4:24 left to make it a 28-21 game. Then the defense rose up with two interceptions for touchdowns.

As the fourth quarter opened, Will Litton intercepted a short pass from the Pioneers and raced 72 yards for the Lyon touchdown. On Grinnell’s next series, Mason Davis intercepted a throw over the middle and returned it 33 yards for another touchdown that put the Scots ahead 41-21.

Grinnell came back midway through the fourth quarter to put up a touchdown, but as the game was winding down, Babers broke up the middle for a 21-yard touchdown to make it 48-28.

Individually, Galay completed 17-of-24 passes for 159 yards and three touchdowns, with one first-half interception. Babers rushed 32 times for 164 yards behind a strong offensive front line that opened holes that allowed him to score two touchdowns. On the receiving end, Brown II had six catches for 32 yards and two touchdowns, Xavier Long had three catches for 27 yards, Washington had one reception for a 54-yard touchdown, Thomas Brunston had one catch for 16 yards, Cedric Allen had two catches for seven yards, and Javarion Williams had one catch for three yards. Babers added three catches for 18 yards, as well.

Defensively, Michael Wingo had eight tackles (six solo and two assisted), Davis had six tackles (four solo and two assisted) with a sack and a 33-yard interception return for a touchdown. Xiyiah Spencer-Cole had five tackles, and Litton had one tackle and a 72-yard interception return for a touchdown. Other leading tacklers for the Scots were Zach Moragne, Quatavious Gatewood, Rian King, Tanner Pollett, Keidrick Wooten, Austin Swaim, Hearsy McCrady, Tristen Wood, Kirby Jackson, Jr., Slayton Wheeler, Caleb Clark, Nate Sarver and Rene Dominique.

The Scots open SCAC play at McMurry on September 14 with a 6 p.m. kickoff.

Scots defeat Hendrix 1-0

CONWAY, Ark. – The Lyon College Scots men’s soccer team defeated the Hendrix College Warriors 1-0 on Friday night in Conway.

The Scots (1-1-1) battled through a scoreless first half to finally get a goal in the 64th minute when Lucca Torres kicked in the winning goal on an assist by Matheus Nunes.

Defenders and midfielders Lucas Crivilatti, Diego Santos, Micah Rangel, Nate Peterson, Gustavo Giesbrecht, Tomas Biasi, and Joao Barros prevented Hendrix from scoring. Scots goalie Gabriel Rangel made eight saves in the match.

Right off the bat, or foot, Barros took a shot in the ninth minute for Lyon College, which was saved. Barros had another shot seconds later, and Torres took an on-goal kick that was also saved. Barros continued to put Hendrix on the defensive with another shot in the 20th minute, and Traviss Ragan had a shot in the 23rd minute for the Scots.

In the second period, Torres took a shot in the 51st minute, and Tomas Biasi had a kick on-goal that was just saved by the Warriors goalie in the 54th minute. Following that play, Barros tried a shot that was just over the top of the goal. Finally, Torres got a scoring goal off a Nunes assist at the 64.45 mark. Later in the match, Peterson got off a shot that was saved in the bottom left corner of the goalie box.

Lyon College men’s and women’s cross country teams run second at Lyon College Invitational

BATESVILLE, Ark. – The Lyon College men’s and women’s cross country teams both finished in second place at the Lyon College Invitational on Friday afternoon.

The Scots women’s team finished behind Mineral Area Community College of Missouri with a points total of 37. The Scots men’s team was second, behind Mineral Area Community College, with a score of 32. LeMoyne-Owen College was third with 76.

Individually for the Lyon College men was Collin Orvin, who finished fourth overall in the 5K race in a time of 18:38.72. James McNew ran fifth overall in a time of 18:42.93; Gavin Bush was seventh in a time of 19:27.78; Noah Cordes was 10th in a time of 20:06.72; Daniel Thomas as 11th in a time of 20:13.46. Timothy Brady finished 12th in a time of 20:28.94, Jakobe Alcorn was 13th in a time of 20:56.15, Sean Hall was 26th in a time of 25:47.0, and Chance Wheeler was 27th in a time of 29:08.0.

Individually, the Lyon College women’s Madison DeRoussel placed third overall in the 5K race, with a time of 21:10.90. Olivia Letkey placed fourth overall, with a time of 22:30.30. Joanna Wilson placed 10th, with a time of 25:35.23. Novalee Lackey placed 11th, with a time of 27:44.16, and Alora Huver placed 13th, with a time of 28:52.56.

Scots win home-opener over Randall University 3-0

BATESVILLE, Ark. – Emily Betzold, Katelyn Balderas, and Jessica Steele each had one goal in a 3-0 shutout win over the Randall University Saints on Thursday afternoon at Huser Field in Batesville.

The Scots (1-2) had 18 on-goal shots in the match (nine in the first half and nine in the second period). Lyon attacked first with a shot by Hanna Birgisdottir that was saved. Steele came back seconds later for another shot as the Scots kept pressuring the ball in the offensive half of the field.

At the 21:23 mark of the first half, Betzold nailed a 25-yard kick into the net to put Lyon College ahead 1-0. Balderas took three shots on goal, and Nataly Furne had a shot in the 36th minute. Furne came back for another shot six minutes later, and the period ended with the Scots holding on to the lead.

Steele had two shots in the first three minutes of the second half, and then Zoe Papazoglou put up a shot that was just saved off the right corner of the goal. Baldares had a shot in the 63rd minute, and Balderas got a header to go in off an assist from Papazoglou at the 68:37 mark of the second half to put Lyon College ahead 2-0.

About seven minutes later, Steele broke free for a goal off an assist from Mikayla Neveloff to make it a 3-0 Scots lead.

Natalie Wyatt came in off the Scots bench to take a shot in the 81st minute, and Angela Penaflor followed with a shot attempt.

Defensively, Allison Byars, Emilee Simpson, Lauren Couture and Emma Rumore kept Randall from scoring. The Scot used Bethanny Moore in the first half at goal and Jessie Stauffer in the second half.

Substitutes Deaiveon Carter, Destinee Flowers, Mackenzie Moody, and Alexis Whitley played crucial minutes for the Scots during the win.
