Lyon Township, Novi and Livonia score big business expansions, high-paying jobs

LANSING — Bring on the jobs.

Lyon Township, Novi and Livonia are all benefiting from upcoming business expansions, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced on Thursday.

Two divisions of Magna International will bring 263 jobs to Lyon Township and Novi, while 20 jobs are coming to Livonia from SkillReal LTD’s plans to establish its U.S. headquarters in the city.

Lyon Township expecting 166 new jobs at Cosma Body Assembly

Cosma Body Assembly Michigan, a subsidiary of Magna International, is expanding its manufacturing facility in the township.

CBAM has additional business from an existing customer, the governor’s office said in a press release, and will construct a 123,296-square-foot expansion to manufacture front and rear underbody structural rails, front and rear assemblies, mid-rail assemblies, rail cover assemblies, wheelhouse assembly, spot welding, projection welding, and highly automated robotic assembly.

The project is expected to generate a capital investment of $35.2 million and create 166 jobs with the support of an $830,000 Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant. Michigan was chosen for the project over a competing site in the south due to the company’s strong presence and existing talent base in the state, according to a press release.

Lyon Township officials have offered to host future job fairs at the township hall to assist the company in finding candidates for the newly created positions. Information on careers with Cosma Body Assembly Michigan can be found here.

Novi welcomes 97 new jobs with Autosystems America

Autosystems America Inc., a division of Magna International, plans to expand in the city of Novi, where it will establish its Center of Excellence for Lighting, adding engineering and testing labs with the support of a Michigan Business Development Program grant, the release explained.

“The investment made by Autosystems America into our community is fantastic news,” State Rep. Matt Koleszar, D-Plymouth, said. “With this $2.45 million investment, along with the $600,000 grant made by the state, we will be able to create 97 high-paying jobs. With the establishment of the Center of Excellence for Lighting, we will be able to ensure that our roads are safer by providing greater visibility while driving at night, which is especially crucial for thousands of hard-working Michiganders.”

Livonia lands new U.S. SkillReal headquarters

SkillReal LTD, headquartered in Israel, will locate its U.S. headquarters in Livonia — a $420,000 investment which will create 20 new jobs in the city, the release said.

The engineering, research and development company offers “Digital Twin Alignment” inspection technologies, which improves safety, reduces production times and offers efficiencies from design through production, according to the state press release.

“I am more than thrilled to welcome Skill Real LTD to Livonia,” state Sen. Mary Cavanagh, D-Redford Twp. said. “Investing in our workforce, talent growth, and people-focused economic development has never been more important, and it’s great to see these priorities actualized in my own district when companies expand in Michigan. I look forward to the innovative solutions and advancements that will come from this exciting, new project.”

The average wage of the new jobs at SkillReal is expected to be $76.20 per hour, plus benefits, compared to the regional media wage of $23.26 per hour. The investment comes with MSF support in the form of a Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant of $420,000.

The company chose Michigan over a competing site in Austin, Texas, for its U.S. Headquarters due to the concentrated presence of OEMs and Tier One suppliers in Detroit and the surrounding areas, the release said.

In addition to the Lyon Township, Novi, and Livonia business expansions, Whitmer also announced a Magna New Mobility USA expansion in Troy that will create 100 jobs and a relocation of Race Ramps from California to Escanaba that will create nine jobs.

“Today’s projects will create 392 jobs and drive nearly $40 million of investment in Southeast Michigan and the UP,” Whitmer said. “Since I took office, we have secured 37,000 auto jobs, and our momentum continues to grow.”
