M4 MacBook Pro teardown reveals nearly identical internals to previous model – 9to5Mac
While the new M4 MacBook Pros got a number of sweet quality of life upgrades, the new MacBooks looked about the same externally, except for the M4 MacBook Pro gaining an additional Thunderbolt port over the M3 model, something that the M3 Pro/M3 Max models already had.
The same also holds true for the internals – with no noteworthy changes over the M3 models.
iFixit shared their M4 Pro MacBook Pro teardown on YouTube yesterday, stating that the “insides of the device look very familiar.”
In a side by side with the M3 Pro MacBook Pro, iFixit notices a slightly larger heatsink to help deal with the additional power of the M4 Pro chip, and that some smaller ICs have moved across the board. Other than those two changes, its mostly the same, keeping a dual-fan layout and the same battery capacity.
With the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus earlier this year, Apple introduced a new, simpler method for removing batteries from the iPhone, allowing potential repairers to swap batteries without a high risk of battery puncture, which can result in fires.
However, the new M4 MacBook Pros offer no such change. Hopefully, we see an improved process for battery replacements in the near future. Apple is expected to redesign the MacBook Pro in 2026.
