Macomb man accused of stealing bullets from Dunham’s Sports

A Macomb Township man is accused of stealing hundreds of dollars worth of bullets from a Dunham’s Sports store this week and damaging an emergency exit trying to get away, authorities said Thursday.

Erik Bronkowski, 26, was arraigned in 42-2 District Court in New Baltimore on charges of possession of ammunition by a prohibited person, assaulting a police officer, second-degree retail fraud, and malicious destruction of property.

According to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office, Bronkowski stole more than $700 worth of ammunition on Monday from the Dunham’s on Gratiot Avenue in Chesterfield Township. He fled from a Dunham’s employee without attempting to purchase the ammunition and broke an emergency exit in the process.

If convicted on the most serious charge relating to ammunition possession, he faces up to five years in prison. Prosecutors said he is being charged as a habitual fourth offender.

“We take offenses involving ammunition very seriously, especially when the individual in question is legally prohibited from possessing it,” Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido said.

His bond was set at $10,000 cash or surety by Magistrate Joseph Plawecki. He is scheduled to return to court at 9 a.m. Thursday, June 20 for a probable cause hearing before Judge William Hackel III.

Bronkowski has been in trouble with police in the past.

Court records show he served time in jail after being convicted of armed robbery in Shelby Township and possession of methamphetamine.
