Make Sure You Stay Safe While Holiday Shopping – X101 Always Classic – WXHC.com
Holiday shopping tips are being offered by both the New York State Police and the Department of Motor Vehicles as shoppers head into the final shopping stretch for the upcoming holidays. With this time of year having more people out shopping, it’s a good time to remember to take extra care to make sure you stay safe when out shopping. Holiday shoppers can take steps to make sure both their vehicles and gifts are secured and safe.
“The New York State Police reminds everyone that holiday shopping can increase chances of theft both online and in stores,” said New York State Police Superintendent Steven G. James. “It may sound simple, but whether you are shopping at a large mall or online, always be aware of your surroundings and use caution when providing financial information. Also, while celebrating this holiday season, remember to never drive drunk or impaired and plan for a responsible ride home. By taking appropriate precautions, we can all enjoy a safe holiday season.”
The New York State Police say if you do plan to go out holiday shopping, shop with a friend or within a group. If you do end up shopping alone, don’t hesitate to ask security to escort you to your vehicle if feeling unsure.
Any purchases you make should be secured in the trunk of your vehicle or under a blanket and out of view from potential thieves. You should never leave any valuables inside your vehicle. Shoppers should also avoid carrying a large amount of cash and to also keep their money and credit cards in front pockets or zipped up in purses to deter pickpockets.
Lastly, if shopping at night, make sure to park in a well-lit area close to the entrance of the building.
