Marquette City Commission approves tax exemption extension for downtown business

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – The Marquette City Commission approved a five-year tax exemption for a downtown business Monday night. The commission approved the extension for the Honorable Distillery on Washington Street.

The exemption falls under the Obsolete Property Rehabilitation Act. With the extension, the distillery will remain taxed at the 2021 rate. Marquette City Manager Karen Kovacs says this won’t impact the city’s general fund.

“This building is in the downtown, so the impact really isn’t anything on the general fund for the city, but it does impact the DDA’s fund,” Kovacs said. “But minimally when you look at the grand scheme of things. This does show support for those small businesses that put in some significant investment into a building that would otherwise be considered obsolete.”

Back in May, the DDA Board also voted to support this extension.
