Marquette sports store offers paddle boarding advice

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – Now that summer is here, Lake Superior is open for water sports. One of those activities is paddle boarding.

Marquette’s Down Wind Sports Co-Owner Bill Thompson said a stand-up board is an inexpensive sport, but people could avoid issues by following safety advice.

Thompson said people need a paddle, lifejacket and leash, which attaches the person to their board. He added that people can’t outswim the wind that drifts the board away. He added it’s important to remember that the weather changes quickly in Lake Superior.

“Great place to explore,” Thompson said. “We’re lucky to live where we do, but you need to take precautions, and there’s a lot of ways to do that and safely get out on the water.”

Check the weather report the day before heading out on an excursion. He said people can also check the marine forecast for wind direction and wave height.

Thompson recommends people visit sports shops for professional advice on proper equipment.
