Marvel Just Admitted A Harsh Truth About The MCU’s World War Hulk Before It’s Even Confirmed
Warning: This article contains spoilers for What If…? season 3, episode 1, “What If… the Hulk Fought the Mech Avengers?”
Despite providing audiences with a glimpse into what an adaptation of Marvel’s World War Hulk story could be like in the MCU, What If…? might have also made this much-anticipated event impossible for the live-action franchise. What If…? season 3 exploring several vibrant new realities and introduced weird and wonderful variants to the MCU, such as the Celestial Agatha Harkness, human/duck hybrid Byrdie and the Mech Avengers. Led by Sam Wilson’s Captain America, the latter inhabit a universe that could have provided insight into one of the MCU’s most-hoped-for upcoming storylines.
For several years now, there have been hopes that Marvel Studios will adapt 2007’s epic World War Hulk event into live-action for the MCU. Following the demise of his wife on Sakaar, World War Hulk saw an exiled and grieving Hulk return to Earth to exact his revenge on the heroes who banished him. This storyline has seemingly been set up in several MCU projects, most notably Thor: Ragnarok, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, and What If…? season 3 could have delivered the next piece in the puzzle.
What If…? Season 3 Was The Closest We’ve Ever Got To World War Hulk
What If…? Season 3’s Premiere Introduced Major Hulk Characters
What If…? season 3, episode 1, “What If… the Hulk Fought the Mech Avengers?,” gave viewers the best look so far at what World War Hulk could be like in the MCU. The episode centered on the Gamma War, which began when Bruce Banner attempted to cure himself of the Hulk by exposing himself to more gamma radiation, but this only created a creature known as the “Apex,” who in turn created an army of Hulk-like monsters. While the Avengers did their best to fight back the Apex and his legion, it was Bruce Banner who eventually won the day.
Exposing himself to even more radiation from the eruption of a gamma bomb, Bruce Banner became the Mega-Hulk, enabling him to defeat the Apex and take command of his army. After teases towards World War Hulk via the exploration of Sakaar, the introduction of the Illuminati and the debut of Skaar, the Hulk’s son, What If…? showed what form this story could actually take in the MCU. However, there’s a huge catch that could spell bad news for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in the MCU.
The Avengers Only Beat The Evil Hulk Because Of Iron Man
Iron Man’s Creation Helped Battle The Apex & His Army In What If…?
The Avengers in What If…? wouldn’t have stood a chance against the Apex and his armies of Hulk-like monsters had it not been for the genius inventions of Tony Stark. When the Apex first emerged at the start of the Gamma War, Stark adapted his pre-existing Hulkbuster armor into massive mech suits, one designed for each Avenger. This made it possible for them to fight the new kaiju villains, but, in the MCU, Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark is dead, so the live-action heroes’ chances of taking down a villain such as the Apex are very slim.

What If…? season 3 episode 1 introduces one of the most powerful versions of the original six Avengers, but shows how lucky the original team was.
There aren’t really any heroes currently in the MCU who have the level of foresight and quick-thinking as Tony Stark, so it’s unlikely that any would think about adapting the Hulkbuster into mech suits. It was Bruce Banner who came up with the Mighty Avenger protocol, allowing the suits to combine as one, but if Banner is AWOL, this could also be impossible. Other geniuses, such as Riri Williams, Shuri, Peter Parker, among others, have the potential to come up with other bright ideas, but What If…? might have proven that World War Hulk simply won’t work in the MCU.
