Women are different from men. Depending on where you stand, those are either fightin’ words or patently obvious. As the transition master coach for Military.com’s veteran employment project, I stand in the “patently obvious” department — especially when it comes to military transition.
Logically, there should not be a big difference. Female military members and male military members do the same jobs for the same pay. Male and female veterans have the same access to the same transition programs. Recruiters are especially hungry to employ female veterans and reach out to me frequently.
Female Veterans Find a Difference on the Civilian Job Market
Yet female veterans get a different outcome on the job market than male veterans. Female veterans tell me they don’t experience the job market like their male peers. It is harder and takes longer. The research backs them up.
- Female veterans are more likely to report their transition was difficult or very difficult.
- If they don’t get a job in the first three months following separation, it takes female veterans longer than male veterans to find a job.
- Female veterans earn lower wages once they transition, compared to male veterans, and they request lower salaries.
- Female veterans are less likely to believe that people in the community respect their military service.
- Female veterans are more likely to leave military service before they planned or wished to, primarily because of personal health problems or responsibilities for children.
- Female veterans are less likely to end up in managerial roles.
- Female veterans are more likely than male veterans to be adversely affected by access to child care.
