The idea for Creators in Fashion, the first runway show to bridge gaming culture and couture clothing, came from MatPat wanting to find more colorful, patterned shirts for men. His ability to spin desire into something tangible like Creators in Fashion is something he attributes to being a creator on YouTube. “If there’s something we want that we don’t see,” he said, “we make it.”

The event is a collaboration between two of the Theorist channels: Game Theory, exploring the lore of all things video games, and Style Theory, doing the same for fashion, both known for their in-depth video essays on YouTube. On April 25, the two different niches will come together for the first time to offer something never-before-seen to fans.

Five Nights At Freddy’s Features The YouTuber Cameo Everyone Was Hoping For

Markiplier may not have had the time to appear in Five Nights at Freddy’s, but we did get the next best person.

Creators in Fashion is a live event being held in Los Angeles, but audiences can tune in to either Theory channel – both of which will be broadcasting the event – to check out these new and exciting clothing collections. The idea has been in the works for over a year and a half now, with the original plan having been to hold the show in late October or early November of 2023.

“Early in planning, though,” MatPat recalls, “we said to ourselves, ‘We need more time.’ … [The event has] been in the works probably since September of last year.”

Creators In Fashion Collaborators

What To Expect From Creators In Fashion

The event will feature six individual runway shows throughout the night that each showcase spring and summer clothing launches from digital creators around the web. Collaborating with Theorists on the event are D&D web series Critical Role, adventure channel Yes Theorists, graphic artist ZHC, and Blogilates founder Cassey Ho. Some creators are showcasing items designed exclusively for the show, while others will be using the opportunity to formally present their most recent offerings to a whole new audience.

Not only is Creators in Fashion the first event of its kind that seeks to bring fashion to nerdy niches like gaming, but it’ll also be the first step into an event like this for plenty of the collaborators, too. “We’re trying to help these creators identify… spaces in their reach,” MatPat said when I asked how involved the Theorist network has been with the creators from the show, detailing how they’ve been helping creators find models and stage presentations that fit their vision. It’s been a lot of work for the past few months with things only picking up as the event draws nearer, but checking in with everyone involved in the show has been important to MatPat as things unfold.

Our interview took place less than three hours before MatPat flew to Los Angeles ahead of the show to be on-site to help bring together the finishing touches. If anything was clear in our interview, it was MatPat’s pride for and passion in what Creators in Fashion is aiming to accomplish, even as
he steps back from his previous role at Theorists
.

Another unique aspect MatPat is proud of bringing to the event is that fans will be able to place orders for items shown on the runway during the show. Individual creators will be handling their own distribution, but the former Game Theorist host said most have product on hand ready to ship immediately.

Creators In Fashion Hosts

The Fans Are At The Forefront Of Creators In Fashion

The focus of the show, MatPat told me, is and always has been on fans, particularly those who may not consider themselves very fashion-forward, and bringing them into a space that might be totally new to them. “For a lot of people watching, their first runway show is actually going to be their first six runway shows,” MatPat said. “The hope is that they’ll see this and say, ‘Hey, maybe there is something here for someone like me.’”

With this fan focus in mind, he says, there will be ample opportunity for audience participation throughout the show. Between runways, backstage interviews, and a few surprises in store from the Theorist channels, the chat will be live throughout the entirety of the event, and MatPat said he’ll be in there himself when he’s not on camera. There will also be dedicated segments during the show for him and Style Theorist co-host Amy Roberts to respond to the chat as comments come in.

His answers to what the best and worst parts of putting together something as ambitious as Creators in Fashion were the same – the amount of collaborative work a show like this requires. MatPat and the Theorist team have been working with the other designers for months now, and he’s feeling the excitement and the pressure as things fall into place. As the event nears, he’s looking forward to “watching all the parts finally congeal into one.”

MatPat is positive that the event will be a learning experience as the group ventures into something uncharted like this. He ended our call with optimism for the future, already eager for what comes next. He spoke of looking forward to applying what they’ve learned to Creators in Fashion 2025, which he spoke of as an inevitability.

Creators in Fashion is airing on the Game Theory, Style Theory, and other affiliated YouTube channels on April 25, 2024. The pre-show begins at 5:30PM EST with the event scheduled to start at 6PM.
