Mattel issues apology after ‘Wicked’ dolls labeled with link to wrong website

Mattel apologized after the toy manufacturer’s “Wicked Fashion Dolls” were mistakenly labeled with a link to an adult entertainment website.

Instead of the film’s official website, which is WickedMovie.com, the doll packages accidentally listed pornographic website Wicked.com.

The website, which requires users to be 18 or older to enter, was printed on packages for the dolls that are made for children 4 years old and older.

“Wicked Pictures was formed with a firm commitment to producing quality parody porn movies,” a description of the website reads. “These forward-thinking ventures allow Wicked to explore new ground while staying true to its core vision of producing quality parody porn movies and strengthening its appeal to cinematic productions.”

The “Wicked” dolls were launched last month ahead of the film‘s premiere on Friday, Nov. 22. They are modeled after the film‘s character’s including Elphaba, portrayed by Cynthia Erivo, and Glinda, portrayed by Ariana Grande.

Customers were quick to catch the error on boxes of the dolls, with many taking to social media to call out Mattel.

“Hey @Mattel whoever is responsible for your marketing/packaging for the new official Wicked dolls have made a HUGE mistake,” one person wrote on X. “The wicked.com on your packaging takes you to a porn site!”

Another X user wrote, “Whoever did this needs to be fired immediately cuz why would they do that knowing that it’s mostly kids buying these dolls.”

In a statement sent to MassLive, Mattel said that the company was aware of the misprint on the packaging of the dolls, which were only sold in the United States.

“Parents are advised that the misprinted, incorrect website is not appropriate for children,” the statement reads. “We deeply regret this unfortunate error and are taking immediate action to remedy this.”

Those who have already bought the dolls are advised to throw away the packaging or cover up the link, Mattel said. People can also contact Mattel Customer Service for more information.
