Maxwood invests $6 million in S.C. expansion, adds 43 jobs – Furniture Today
Historically a supplier of youth and bedroom furniture, Maxwood entered dining in 2022.
MARION, S.C. – Solid wood youth and bedroom furniture supplier Maxwood will invest $6 million to expand its distribution facility in Marion, S.C., creating 43 jobs.
Maxwood first purchased the 500,000-square-foot warehouse in fall 2022 and has spent the past two years renovating it.
“It’s a continuation of the expansion we started a couple years ago,” Steven Krupczak, senior director of operations, told Furniture Today. “We refurbished an old mill building into a warehouse. That’s finished. Now we need to invest in people and in systems.”
The facility will allow the company to turn more product over faster. It’ll also help the company continue to diversify its product offering. Primarily a youth and bedroom supplier, Maxwood expanded into dining and occasional in 2022.
“As we continue to diversify our product portfolio, it becomes more important,” said Carina Buckman, sales and operations manager. “We started with our Matrix youth furniture brand and now we’ve broken into other segments. As the complexity of our portfolio increases, we have to be smarter about how we order and sort. Fast shipping is also an expectation, and this will help us execute on that.”
Maxwood received a $200,000 rural infrastructure grant from the county to assist with the expansion, as well as job development credits from the state.
The facility is set to be fully operational by 2028.
“It’s a long process especially with technology,” said Krupczak. “To automate, we have to map the warehouse. We upgraded our WMS system. It all takes time.”
Maxwood is a family-owned and -operated company that designs, manufactures and distributes solid wood furniture products. The company manufactures furniture out of its 1.3-million-square-foot Vietnam facility, which it doubled in size in 2022.
