Mayfield High program that prepares students for in-demand jobs gets state recognition

MAYFIELD, Ohio — A Mayfield High School program that has students gaining real-world experience in in-demand jobs has been met with state approval.

Mayfield City Schools has announced that the high school’s Learn and Earn program has gained approval from the Ohio State Apprenticeship Council as a state-recognized, Pre-Apprenticeship Program.

“This milestone acknowledges Mayfield High School’s commitment to preparing students for success in multiple pathways, including our registered apprenticeship programs,” said Mayfield High School Associate Principal of Innovative & Consortium Programming Deanna Elsing, in a release.

“This partnership prepares our students with foundational skills, opens doors to high-demand careers, and reaffirms our commitment to providing innovative, real-world learning opportunities.”

Pre-Apprenticeship credentials in Information Technology will be offered through Mayfield High School’s Learn and Earn programs in manufacturing, home building and in the auto industry.

In addition, sport health and facility management will be offered in the Pre-Apprenticeship program during the 2025-26 school year.

Students who participate and complete their program will earn an industry credential for their resume and college application, along with hands-on experience outside the classroom with an industry-trained professional.

There are now 94 students enrolled in the Learn and Earn program with enrollment climbing each year.

“Mayfield’s Learn and Earn program exemplifies the district’s mission to prepare students for success in a rapidly changing world,” Elsing said.

Through the Learn and Earn state-recognized, Pre-Apprenticeship programs career-driven high school students develop a deeper understanding of industry standards, real-world work environments, and practical skills including:

— Building Technical Expertise: By working directly with tools, materials, and processes, students gain practical knowledge and confidence that can’t be learned from textbooks alone.

— Understanding Career Pathways: Experiencing a day in the life of these industries helps students clarify their interests and align their education with their career goals. — Developing Soft Skills: Teamwork, problem-solving, and time management are integral to these environments, equipping students with transferable skills for any career.

— Increasing Employability: Hands-on training often leads to industry-recognized credentials, making students competitive in the workforce upon graduation.

— Promoting Innovation: Exposure to modern technologies and practices inspires creativity and innovation, preparing students to contribute to evolving industries.

“This initiative not only benefits students, but also strengthens Ohio’s workforce by fostering talent in industries critical to the state’s economy,” Elsing said.
