MDOT removing orange barrels to some roads statewide ahead of Memorial Day travel

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is removing lane restrictions on 55% of its road and bridge projects statewide ahead of Memorial Day weekend to ease traffic delays for drivers.

AAA said more than 1.3 million Michiganders are expected to travel 50 miles or more from home during the Memorial Day weekend—a 4% increase from 2023 and the second-highest forecast since 2000.

85 out of the 154 projects throughout Michigan will have lane restrictions removed beginning Friday, May 24, at 3 p.m. MDOT advises drivers that equipment and certain traffic configurations—such as temporary shifts or shoulder closures—will still remain in place. The lane restrictions will be put back into place at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, May 28.

  • I-69, Clinton County, has one lane closed in each direction between Old US-27 to US-127.
  • I-96, Eaton and Ingham counties, has traffic shifted from Canal Road to Washington Road with the following restrictions:
