Megan Thee Stallion Wins ‘Savage’ Copyright Infringement Case

A federal judge has dismissed the copyright infringement allegations against Megan Thee Stallion in the ‘Savage’ case. “Plaintiff’s (James A Greene) work is qualitatively different from Savage and any similarities implicate common, non-copyrightable elements of any song,” said judge Katherine Polk Failla. Elaborating on the lack of evidence, the judge said it was highly unlikely Warner Bros. and Megan Thee Stallion had any access to Greene’s original. Greene dropped ‘It’s About To Be On’ in 1999 and claimed that Stallion’s 2020 hit ‘Savage’ had the same drum pattern, piano notes and siren sounds. Drawing a contrast between the two songs in her judgment, she pointed out that the siren sounds in Savage are actually a distorted vocal sample. Megan Thee Stallion, Warner Bros., and James A Greene have yet to comment on the judgment.
