Michael Douglas, 79, says his kids’ college thought he was a grandfather on Parents’ Day: ‘That was a rough one’

Michael Douglas revealed he was once mistaken for his children’s grandfather while visiting one of his kids at college.

The Oscar winner, 79, recalled the awkward moment in a new interview with the Telegraph, admitting that the ordeal was “rough.”

“This is not grandfather’s day, this is parents’ day. I say ‘I am a parent!’,” he told the outlet. “That was a rough one.”

The “Fatal Attraction” actor didn’t specify whether the mishap took place while he was visiting his 23-year-old son, Dylan, or his 21-year-old daughter, Carys.

He shares both kids with his wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones, to whom he’s been married since 2000.

Carys currently attends Brown University in Rhode Island, while Dylan graduated from the same college in 2022.

Douglas also shares 45-year-old son Cameron with his ex-wife, Diandra Luker, to whom he was married from 1977 to 2000.

The “Basic Instinct” actor also opened up in the interview about his 25-year marriage to the “Mask of Zorro” actress.

Calling his marriage a “good ride,” Douglas believes that expanding his family later on in life has made him a better father.

Having said that, the actor admitted that it’s not always been the case.

“Cameron suffered a lot from that time,” he said of his eldest son. “I was just overwhelmed and overloaded by my work.”

“And family was really taking third place after work, our country and then the family, as opposed to when Catherine and I got together. And you’ve done enough work already that you were looking more to enjoy the opportunity and the kids,” he added.

Douglas also opened up about being an empty nester with Zeta-Jones, 54.

“Catherine and I have been together, it’ll be 25 years this year,” he said. “So it’s been a good ride and I’ve been very fortunate, happy with the choices that I’ve made and now am kind of really backing off and smelling the roses a little more, traveling more.”

As for his children, the actor’s youngest son previously told Page Six that his famous dad has a lot of “bad jokes.”

“More in terms of what he says, rather than who he is,” Dylan said in April 2023. “Just dad stuff. [He’s a] bit out of touch, bad jokes for sure!”
