Millions of people expected to travel for Fourth of July

SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) – We’re less than a week away from Independence Day, and people are already on the move.

An estimated 6.5 million people are expected to be traveling throughout the ArkLaTex. That’s 7% higher than the amount of people traveling in the area back in 2019, before the pandemic, according to Donald Redman. The public affairs specialist with AAA says they expect to see most people traveling on roadways.

“Through our region, we’re looking at about 5.5, 5.7 million people who will be traveling…by car,” Redman said.

He recommends checking your car before traveling to ensure a safe trip. Also, bring items like umbrellas and other necessities in case you have car maintenance issues.

“Expect the unexpected. And so that means you probably want to have a little cooler with some water with you in case you do experience some kind of breakdown on the side of road,” Redman said.

Jonathon Scoggins, the vice president of operations at AVIS Rent a Car, says the holiday causes their business to slow down because of people travel out of the area for the holiday.

“It slows down. We typically have more of a corporate customer who comes into our area. So, when it’s a leisure holiday as in the Fourth of July and Memorial Day, we tend to slow down during those holiday’s,” Scoggins explained.

Shreveport Regional Airport expects to see an influx of flyers for Fourth of July.
