Minnesota One of the Safest States for Travel in December
If you have plans to go over the hills and through the woods this holiday season here in Minnesota, you’re in luck. This is one of the safest states for travel around Christmas in America.
A study that was conducted by the personal injury law firm John Foy and Associates looked at each state and the data that was provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administrations Fatality Analysis Reporting System or “FARS” for short.
This report says that Minnesota is the 4th safest for travel in the month of December.
Those numbers were determined by looking at four categories between 2018 and 2022;
Total holiday collisions
Fatal Collisions in December per 100,000 people
December fatal collisions as a percentage of all fatal collisions
and
Christmas fatal collisions as a percentage December fatal collisions
The findings say that in Minnesota there were 0.49 traffic fatalities in Minnesota in December over the five years that were listed above. During that time, Minnesota saw 23 holiday collisions, and the percentage of December fatal collisions compared to all fatal crashes was 7.24%.
And when Christmas fatalities were analyzed compared with December fatal collisions were a little more than 7%.
The three states that had better numbers than Minnesota were Rhode Island, that only had 4 total holiday collisions during that period, New York and Massachusetts.
The states below Minnesota for safe December travel were New Jersey, Utah, Connecticut, North Dakota, Washington and Wisconsin.
It was apparent that states that have large rural or mountainous areas were at risk for more fatal crashes.
Drivers are encouraged to plan their trips in advance, leave plenty of time to arrive when you want to, and be aware of the weather along the path of your journey. Also make sure your vehicle is in good shape for the traveling you need to do.
