Miss World 1963 Carole Joan Crawford has died
Jamaica’s first Miss World, Carole Joan Crawford, has died.
Crawford, who won the title of Miss World in 1963, died on December 18. She was 81.
A release from son Stephan Merkens called Crawford “a cherished icon of grace, beauty, and philanthropy”.
Born on August 31, 1943, in Kingston, Jamaica, she was crowned Miss World in 1963 at the age of 20 and was the first Jamaican and Caribbean woman to win the prestigious title.
Standing at five feet, three inches tall, she is also one of the shortest women to have ever won the competition.
Crawford continued to make an impact following her reign and was an ardent ambassador for the island.
“Beyond the crown, Carole dedicated her life to advocating for education, community development, and the empowerment of young women. She became a beloved ambassador for Jamaica, using
her platform to highlight the vibrancy of the island’s culture and people. Her legacy as a trailblazer continues to inspire generations,” said Merkens in the release, adding that the late beauty queen will be missed.
“In her personal life, Carole was known for her warmth, humility, and unwavering commitment to her family. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who found immense joy in nurturing her loved ones and sharing stories of her remarkable journey. She is survived by her loving family and a global community of admirers who celebrate her legacy of strength, compassion, and elegance.”
Jamaica has won the Miss World three times since Crawford’s win, with Cindy Breakspeare taking home the crown in 1976; Lisa Hanna, 1993 and Toni-Ann Singh, 2019.
