MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 10

Oakland Athletics vs. Toronto Blue Jays

First Pitch – 3:07 pm EST
Rogers Centre – Toronto, Ontario
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Atheltics rank 26th in the majors in run scoring and things haven’t been better lately. They’ve scored just 12 runs in their last five games (2.4 runs per game). In addition, they’ve been a touch worse in the first inning, where they rank 27th in the league in runs scored.

Those factors should help Yariel Rodriguez, who has been up and down this year. He got absolutely shelled by the Orioles in his last July start – failing to even get out of the first inning. However, he showed a lot more promise last time out, holding the Yankees scoreless over 4.2. With the Athletics being a much worse offense, he should be able to get an NRFI started for us.

Toronto also doesn’t have an offense that’s setting the world on fire. I expect their 23rd ranked offense to struggle with Osvaldo Bido, who has looked servicable since moving to the rotation. He has two quality starts in three attempts since moving to the rotation. Those came against the Astros and the Dodgers, who both have substantially better offenses than the Blue Jays. He allowed just three earned runs over 11.0 innings in those games with 12 strikeouts.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 10: No (+105)

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Los angeles Dodgers

First Pitch – 9:10 pm EST
Dodger Stadium – Los Angeles, California
Broadcast – MLB TV

There’s not just one fun rookie throwing in Los Angeles on Saturday. While Skenes will look to manage the bottom half of our NRFI, we’ll get a fourth look at River Ryan in the top half. In his previous three starts (15.2 innings), he’s allowed just three earned runs. He’s also struck out 14 in that span. His only real issue has been walks, but with the Pirates ranking in the middle of the league in free passes, he should be able to skirt that here in the first.

The aforementioned Paul Skenes is back again in the bottom of the inning. He’s locked up the Rookie of the Year at this point and is trying to make it a double with the Cy Young. With his ERA under 2.00 and only five earned runs allowed in the last four starts, I don’t feel like the Pirates have much of a chance here to get to him. They have even less chance in the first inning, where they’ve been miserable. They rank 28th in scoring in the first inning across the league.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 10: No (-125)
