MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 13

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Cincinnati Reds

First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
Great American Ball Park – Cincinnati, Ohio
Broadcast – MLB TV

On Monday, we played this NRFI and hit at -120, and I see no reason not to get after this series again. As I said yesterday, the Cardinals have issues scoring runs straight up – ranking 22nd in the year. They are even worse on the road where they rank 25th. They showed off a little of that ineptitude with a single run on Monday. Now they’ll face Hunter Greene, who has really found his stride. He’s allowed just three earned runs in his four starts since the All-Star break and has lowered his ERA to 2.90. He also has 28 strikeouts in those four starts while throwing 26.0 innings.

The Reds are not as bad as the Cardinals in terms of hitting – in fact, they’re basically a middle of the pack team. However, they just haven’t been all that hot with the bats lately. They scored six runs on Monday, but that moves their four game total up to just 13 (or 3.25 runs per game). Erick Fedde shouldn’t make that easier for them. He posted a 2.53 ERA in the month of July. Despite having a rough outing to start his Cardinals tenure, he settle backed in with five innings of one-run ball last time out. He should have what we need to get a second straight NRFI in this series.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 13: No (-115)

Seattle Mariners vs. Detroit Tigers

First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
Comerica Park – Detroit, Michigan
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Mariners kick off the top of the first inning on Tuesday just half of a game out of first place in the AL West, but that isn’t due to their hitting. They’re 27th in runs scored, 30th in strikeouts, 30th in team batting average, and 28th in team slugging percentage. Nothing seems to be going right for them at the place. Tarik Skubal coming to the bump isn’t going to help matters here. He’s not only listed at -370 odds for the Cy Young, but he seems to be getting better down the stretch. I can’t imagine this Mariners team getting to him at all, never mind in the first inning.

Detroit is doing better at the plate, but not by a wide margin. They rank in the bottom third of the league in both runs and runs in the first inning. Now they’ll draw George Kirby, who last gave up more than three runs in a game on May 24th. His ERA has plummeted to 3.13 and his strikeout numbers have picked up a tick as well. With this elite pitching matchup in place on Tuesday, you have to imagine a low scorer.
