MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 14

Seattle Mariners vs. Detroit Tigers

First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
Comerica Park – Detroit, Michigan
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Mariners continue to be one of the most perplexing teams in the league. They are in great position to make the playoffs with one of the very worst offenses in the league. They rank 30th in stirkeouts and 30th in team batting average. It’s not even like they are slugging well, where they rank 28th in the league – only ahead of the Marlins and White Sox.

They have an interesting task on hand Wednesday with Beau Brieske. The Tigers have occasionally been testing him as a starter. Last time out, he got stretched all the way to three innings. In that outing, he allowed no runs and struck out five. That’s a good sign and this lineup shouldn’t be able to upset that groove.

In the bottom of the inning, Bryan Woo looks to close the door. Had he not been beat up with injuries so often, his average stats would have him in the running for some hardware. He carries a 2.27 ERA into Wednesday with a 0.88 WHIP. He’s allowed three or less runs in each of his last four starts, which includes a pair of shutout performances. The Tigers are 21st in the league at scoring in the first, which shouldn’t be much of a threat to the NRFI here.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 14: No (-120)

Atlanta Braves vs. San Francisco Giants

First Pitch – 9:45 pm EST
Oracle Park – San Francisco, California
Broadcast – MLB TV

First of all, this series has been wildly low scoring, and not just in the first inning. They’ve now played two of the four games in this set. They have scored just eight runs so far. That includes an extra inning in both games, which means there has been just six runs scored in regularly scheduled action.

The problem with the Braves offense is unlikely to be solved with Robbie Ray on the bump. He’s allowed just two runs in each of his last two starts. While he got a late start to the year and has a small sample size, his sub-4.00 ERA is respectable enough to believe he can keep the Braves bats cold.

On the other side of things, Grant Holmes has been a bit of a revelation for the Braves. When they choose not to make any moves for pitchers at the trade deadline, you had to assume they had internal options they liked. He is certainly a welcomed surprise. He got hit around a bit in the thin air of Coors Field. Prior to that, he had allowed just four runs in 9.2 innings as a starter. Add in that he’s struck out 20 over his two starts and he should be able to wrap up our NRFI for us.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 14: No (-125)
