MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 22

Tampa Bay Rays vs. Oakland Atheltics

First Pitch – 3:37 pm EST
Oakland Coliseum – Oakland, California
Broadcast – MLB TV

This game may not be one that more than a half dozen or so will tune into, but they’re all going to miss a solid pitching matchup in Oakland. The Atheltics will send Osvaldo Bido to the bump and the righty has been lights out in his last few starts. He’s coming off back-to-back 6.0 inning scoreless outings, and has allowed just two runs in his last 18.0 innings. That should be plenty to hold back the Rays, who have fallen to 28th in the league in run scoring. They are also in the bottom third of the league in scoring in the first inning. They may not score on Bido all day, never mind in the first inning.

The bottom of the inning shouldn’t be much more of a sweat either. Jeffery Springs looks to bring this NRFI home for us. He’s allowed just two runs in his last two starts (10.0 innings). Those starts came against the Orioles and the Diamondbacks, who are two of the more dangerous offenses out there. Oakland, meanwhile, ranks 25th in the league in runs scored and have consistently been one of the worst offensive teams for the last few years.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 22: No (-140)

Cincinnati Reds vs. Pittsburgh Pirates

First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
PNC Park – Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Broadcast – MLB TV

It’s Paul Skenes day in Pittsburgh, which also usually means it’s a day that I like an NRFI there. His dominance has been thoroughly documented and it comes even against some of the better hitting teams in the league. The Reds are not that. They’re middle of the pack in terms of scoring runs and near the bottom of the league in scoring during the first inning. They did score 11 runs on Wednesday, but had scored just 11 total in the previous four games.

To close out the NRFI for today, we have Nick Lodolo trying to shut down the Pirates for three outs. Some might why away from playing this after seeing him get shelled by the Royals last time out. However, he’s got two things working for him. Firstly, the Pirates do not have close to the same offense as the Royals. Secondly, he’s been mostly good in the first inning anyways. Although he gave up eight runs in that game, he gave up just one in the first inning. That’s the only first inning run he’s given up in his last five starts.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 22: No (-160)
