MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 26

New York Yankees vs. Washington NAtionals

First Pitch – 6:45 pm EST
Nationals Park – Washington, DC
Broadcast – MLB TV

I understand that the Yankees are the second best team in the league at scoring runs and are the best in the first inning. However, prior to scoring two in the first on Sunday, they had a little bit of a dry spell early in the game. They also will be away from the friendly fences in New York.

To add to all of that, I’m throwing my support behind Mitchell Parker. Apart from one game where he got blasted by the Phillies, he’s been outstanding as of late. Outside of that game, he’s allowed just one earned run in the month of August in three additional starts. His strikeout numbers are jumping up a bit too, which I like for NRFI purposes.

In the bottom of the first it should be a lot less sweaty. The Nationals are one of the worst teams in the league at scoring early (currently ranked 27th). They scored just 3.0 runs per game in their recent series with the Braves. Things won’t get easier for them with Nestor Cortes taking the hill. The Yankees lefty is coming off two straight starts of 7.0 innings of shutout baseball – the latter of which was against the Guardians. As a result, I highly doubt Washington will give him much trouble.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 26: No (-105)

Atlanta Braves vs. Minnesota Twins

First Pitch – 7:05 pm EST
Target Field – Minneapolis, Minnesota
Broadcast – MLB TV

The top of the first will see Bailey Ober on the bump. He’s been great this past month as well. In his last five starts (33.0 innings), he’s allowed just seven total runs. Addditionally, he’s struck out 35 in that time. That’s a nightmare for the Braves, who just can’t seem to get their offense going. Despite going 3-2 in their last five games, they’ve score just 13 runs (2.6 runs per game). Ober should be able to get the first three outs without too much issue.

In the bottom of the inning, we’ll attempt to bring the NRFI home with Max Fried. Although he looked a little shakey with the walks after coming back from the IL, he settled in nicely against the Phillies last time out. He threw 7.0 innings with only one walk and two earned runs. This Minnesota offense is right around the Phillies in terms of run scoring. Although it is worth noting, they are quite a bit worse when it comes to the first inning. I’ll trust Fried to keep them quiet here early.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 26: No (-125)
