MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 3

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Chicago Cubs

First Pitch – 2:20 pm EST
Wrigley Field – Chicago, Illinois
Broadcast – ESPN+

In the top half of the first, Jameson Taillon and his 3.36 ERA takes the hill looking to get our NRFI started right. He did get roughed up a bit last time out against the Reds. However, the only other time he gave up more than three earned run in a start this year, he bounced back the next time out with a scoreless outing.

Playing the Cardinals will help that bounceback. Not only is St. Louis in the bottom third of the league in terms of run scoring, but Taillon has been solid against them as well. He’s thrown against them three times and never allowed more than three runs. Most importantly for this case, he also did not allow a first inning run to them in any of those three starts.

The bottom of the inning should be even easier. For one, the Cubs are actually a touch worse than the Cardinals in scoring runs. They rank 22nd in the league in runs scored and 21st in the least in first inning runs. Additionally, Kyle Gibson has really settled in as of late. He’s allowed just three earned runs over his last two starts (11.2 innings). That comes out to a 2.31 ERA since the middle of July. I expect him to keep it rolling here and finish off this NRFI.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 3: No (-140)

Chicago White Sox vs. Minnesota Twins

First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
Target Field – Minneapolis, Minnesota
Broadcast – MLB TV

We all expected Garrett Crochet to move at the trade deadline, but here he is – still a White Sox. While that might not be the best for him if he wants to pitch competitive games, it is good for our NRFIs. The 25-year old lefty has been solid all year. He carries a 3.23 ERA into the weekend and has allowed just five earned runs over his last three starts. I also like that he was solid against the Twins last time out. He allowed just two earned runs over 5.0 innings and struck out seven last time he faced them.

On the other side of things, what is there to say? It’s the White Sox. They rank dead last in the majors in runs. They rank dead last in the majors in first inning runs. Of course, Bailey Ober doesn’t hurt matters either. He threw eight scoreless innings last time out against the Tigers, who are a far better hitting team. In that game he also allowed just one hit and stuck out 11. He should be able to keep the ball rolling and finish off this NRFI.
