MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 7

Milwaukee BRewers vs. Atlanta Braves

First Pitch – 7:20 pm EST
Truist Park – Atlanta, Georgia
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Braves offense has gone South yet again this past week. They’ve been shut out in back-to-back games and have scored just 12 runs in their last five. They aren’t in a bounceback spot here either. Freddy Peralta takes the hill with intentions to keep that going. He carries a 3.89 ERA into Wednesday’s action and has only allowed five earned runs over his last three starts (16.1 innings). His most recent of those starts was aginst these same Braves. Although he did allow two runs, he held them quiet for the first three innings, and that’s more than enough to get us our NRFI.

Although the Brewers are a hot hitting team, the other side of the NRFI equation starts and ends with Chris Sale. He hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in a start since June 1st. He also has a solid history against the Brewers. In three career starts, he’s thrown 21.1 innings. In those starts he has a 1.66 ERA and 24 strikeouts. All we need here is three outs and he should be able to get us those.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 7: No (-140)

Tampa Bay Rays vs. St. Louis Cardinals

First Pitch – 7:45 pm EST
Busch Stadium – St. Louis, Missouri
Broadcast – MLB TV

In the top half of the first inning, Erick Fedde takes the bump for the Cardinals. While his debut in red didn’t go as planned, the fact of the matter is that he’s still been very solid on the year. Prior to that, it has been since June that he allowed more than three earned runs in a game.

Facing the Rays should get him back on the right foot. Not only are they one of the worst teams in the league in scoring runs (27th ranked currently), but they also traded away a handful of key hitters. With Yandy Diaz and his 10 home runs left behind to hold down the fort, I don’t imagine the Rays will be putting up numbers early.

In the bottom half, I’m also not terribly worried about the offense. They’ve scored just six runs in their last three games and just 12 over their last five. They rank 24th in runs scored and are on a downward trend. Taj Bradley will be the one keeping that trend in tact. He gave up four runs in his last outing, but had been three straight outings prior without allowing any runs. His ERA has sunk down to 2.71 and that gives me all the confidence I need to stifle the red birds.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 7: No (-140)
