MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 8

Los Angeles Angels vs. New York Yankees

First Pitch – 7:05 pm EST
Yankee Stadium – Bronx, New York
Broadcast – MLB TV

The top of the first should be the less sweaty of the who halves here. For one, the Angels have been bad all season on offense (26th currently in run scoring), but they have been even worse in the first inning. They are are averaging just 0.39 runs per game in the first inning, which puts them less than a tenth of a run away from the lowly White Sox. That number has just been going steadily down as they haven’t put up a single first inning run in the last three games. While Nestor Cortez hasn’t exactly been on fire lately, he should have enough to keep them at bay early.

In the bottom half, we do have an offense to fear. The Yankees are second in the majors in runs and first when it comes to scoring early. However, I’m putting my trust in Tyler Anderson here, who is having an underratedly good year. He has a 3.05 ERA, which ranks 11th in the majors among qualified pitchers. He also threw well when he faced the Yankees earlier in the season – finishing 5.0 innings and allowing just one earned run. With these elevated odds, I like his chances of closing the door on the NRFI for us.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 8: No (-115)

Tampa Bay Rays vs. St. Louis Cardinals

First Pitch – 7:15 pm EST
Busch Stadium – St. Louis, Missouri
Broadcast – MLB TV

I liked the NRFI in this game yesterday – although it ultimately was not successful. However, I’m doubling down on it today for all the same reasons.

The first of which is the brutal offense coming out of St. Petersburg. They’ve scored just six runs in their last three games and are now under four runs per game on the year. They’ll face Kyle Gibson, who has been pretty solid this season. He had a little trouble with the Cubs last time out, but was coming off of back to back starts with two or less earned runs. He should have what it takes to get through this depleted Rays squad in the first.

The second half of the NRFI doesn’t have a much better offense. St. Louis ranks 23rd in the league in run scoring and has scored just 11 runs in the last four games. Shane Baz should be the man to keep that going. He’s allowed just four earned runs over his last three starts and is maintaining a 3.60 ERA on the season. No reason to think that the Cardinals can get to him early here.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 8: No (-135)
