MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 9

Chicago Cubs vs. Chicago White Sox

First Pitch – 8:10 pm EST
Guaranteed Rate Field – Chicago, Illinois
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Cubs head across town to take on the White Sox on Friday night and opposing them will be Garrett Crochet and his 3.19 ERA. The White Sox have been keeping his pitch counts down in his last two starts, which means he should be plenty rested and not overworked for the first inning here. He had a great last outing against the Twins going just 4.0 innings, but allowing only one run on one hit in that span. The Cubs are 19th in the league in both scoring runs and scoring first inning runs – so an empty frame here shoiuldn’t be all that hard for Crochet.

The other side of the NRFI equation here has far more to do with the bats than the arm. The White Sox rank dead last in all the run scoring metrics that we care about. Currently they’re scoring just 0.30 runs per game in the first. Jameson Taillon is no walkover either. He’s allowed more than three earned runs just once since June 6th. I don’t expect a big change here with the Southsiders being as bad as they are. So there’s no doubt that he should be able to button up this NRFI.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 9: No (-130)

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Los angeles Dodgers

First Pitch – 10:10 pm EST
Dodger Stadium – Los Angeles, California
Broadcast – MLBN

Speaking of teams that have really struggled in the first inning, the Pirates are 28th in the majors in first inning runs with just 0.38 per game.  Not only will they have to overcome their own woes here, but they have to overcome new Dodgers addition Jack Flaherty. In his Dodger debut he went 6.0 innings and didn’t allow a run on five hits. That was his second consecutive 6.0 inning shutout, with the last one coming in his final appearance as a Tiger. I don’t know if he’ll get a third straight, but I like him here to get us the first three outs without any issue.

To close out the NRFI, we’ll need to sweat through a half inning against this impressive Dodgers offense. However, I;m going to put my faith in Mitch Keller. Keller has been heating up along with the weather. After a tough April, he’s worked his ERA down to 3.20 on the year and has been even better as of late. He’s been five straight starts, dating back to July 2nd, since the last time he allowed more than two earned runs in a game. He’s also been three straight since the last first inning run he allowed.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 9: No (-135)
