MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 19

Detroit Tigers vs. Toronto Blue Jays

First Pitch – 7:07 pm EST
Rogers Centre – Toronto, Ontario
Broadcast – Apple TV+

Coming out of the break, Chris Bassitt will look to keep these Tigers at bay. The order isn’t too tall for Bassitt with the way the Tigers offense has been this season. They rank 18th in the league in run scoring and are 15th at scoring in the first inning. On top of that, Bassitt went into the break throwing well. He has just a 3.52 ERA and has kept his opponents to three or fewer runs in all but one start since April. In fact, his June ERA was just 1.95, which included scoreless outings against both the Yankees and the Brewers. He should have no issue limiting the Tigers for three outs here.

To close out the NRFI, we’ll lean on Jack Flaherty, who probably could have been an all-star. He had a sub-1.00 ERA amd a 3.13 ERA going into the break. If there’s a reason he didn’t get the nod, it’s probably that he got hot a little later. He has allowed just one or fewer runs in five of his last six games – including six innings of one-run baseball against the Guardians in his lone July start. Given that, he should have no issues with Toronto, who ranked 24th in the league in runs scored.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 19: No (-135)

San Diego Padres vs. Cleveland Guardians

First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
Progressive Field – Cleveland, Ohio
Broadcast – Apple TV+

In the top half of the first of this one, the Padres will look to spoil things for us. However, their offense wasn’t causing much trouble for anyone heading into the break. They scores just 11 runs over their last five games (2.2 runs per game). Things don’t get much easier for them here facing Tanner Bibee. While he had a couple of rough starts to kick off July, he carried a 2.86 ERA through June and ended it with three games allowing two or less runs. The break was probably good for his arm and I imagine it’ll take the Padres a touch to find their timing.

To close out our second NRFI, we’ll put our trust in sometimes knuckleballer Matt Waldron. The Braves got to him in his last start before the All-Star break, but prior to that, he had been on a great run. He had 11 straight starts allowing three or less runs. It may seem like a tall task for him to limit the Guardians, who are a top 10 team in terms of run scoring, but they actually are far worse in the first inning. They rank just 17th in scoring in the first inning. They also had scored only nine runs in their last five games going into the break (1.8 runs per game). Waldron should be able to keep that going for us.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 19: No (-125)
