MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 21

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Chicago Gubs

First Pitch – 2:20 pm EST
Wrigley Field – Chicago, Illinois
Broadcast – MLB TV

The top half of the first might be the sweatiest part of any of Sunday’s NRFI action for us. The Diamondbacks continue to hit the ball well, but I’m putting my trust in Shota Imanaga. He had a couple of rough outings just before All-Star break, but even in those outings he was mostly good early. Then, Imanaga was able to right the ship with an outing that looked like his old self (if there is such a thing at this stage in his career). He mowed over the hard hitting Orioles for a scoreless 6.0 innings with six strikeouts. That version of him, if he is there on Sunday, should be able to get us started right.

The bottom half of the first should be quite a bit easier for us here for a couple reasons. Firstly, the Cubs are 23rd in the majors in runs scored. The culprit if the fact that the bulk of their order is playing below their projections. Secondly, Brandon Pfaadt has been white hot as of late. In his last three starts (16.1 innings), he has allowed just two total earned runs. He’s struck out 18 over that stretch and threw a scoreless outing against the Braves last time out.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 21: No (-130)

Houston Astros vs. Seattle Mariners

First Pitch – 4:10 pm EST
T-Mobile Park – Seattle, Washington
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Mariners may be holding on to a playoff spot, and are just one game behind the Astros for the division, but the reason isn’t their offense. They rank 28th in runs scored and are averaging just 1.33 per game over their last three. In fact, nobody has scored less in their last three than the Mariners. To add to their misery, they are also striking out more than any team in the league. Now they’ll face Ronel Blanco. He carries a 2.56 ERA into Sunday’s action with 100 strikeouts on the dot. He shouldn’t have any issue keeping them quiet.

If that’s the case, then our NRFI comes down to the top of the first in Seattle. Bryan Woo will look to get the job done against the 10th ranked Astros offense. Despite being banged up a bit this year, he’s been solid. He has a 2.45 ERA and has only allowed more than three earned runs in a contest once this season. The Astros have scored just 10 runs in their last four games, which means they aren’t firing on all cylinders at the moment either.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 21: No (-130)
